Content Design and Microcopies
Content design and interface microcopies: voice, scripts, buttons, errors, empty states, forms, and comprehensibility checks.
Interface text helps a person understand a situation, make choices and recover from a mistake: Start with an intention and the next action, use the user’s words and check the text along with the design and behavior of the system - out of context, even a successful phrase can be misleading.
What is Content Design in UX
Definition and difference from copywriting
Content design is about designing messages and texts in interfaces so that the user quickly understands what to do and what to expect next, and the main task is to make the product path simple and clear.
Unlike copywriting or marketing texts, content design focuses on in-product usage scenarios, instructions, headlines, error messages. It’s not about selling, it’s about convenience.
Example
Ordinary copywriting: Open an account and enjoy the freedom to shop!
Content design:
Open an account. The money will be available after approval.
The difference is noticeable: the second option removes ambiguity and unnecessary emotions, focusing on the essence.
Microcopies: Small texts, a big role
Why do we need microtexts?
Microcopies are short phrases, buttons, pop-up tips, field labels, and error messages, and their goal is to remove unnecessary questions in the process and make feedback transparent.
Many studies show that well-designed microtexts reduce errors in filling out forms, speed up registration and reduce the outflow of users.
Anti-patterns in microcopies
Frequent errors:
- Too general or frightening text: Mistake! Try again.
- Internal jargon: User ID is not available.
- Excessive formality or excessive care: Oh, something went wrong, very sorry.
For example, instead of a 404 system error, try a part of the site not found. Check the link or go back to the main one.
Best Practices for Microtext Design
Make it simple and clear.
Each text must answer a user’s question before they ask it, and it works: minimal, clear, timely.
It is appropriate to use short words, action verbs, and simple sentences: for example, Save instead of Complete the registration process.
Test and revision
Don’t do texts once and forget, and often after release, you can see where users get confused, and feedback gathering and quick edits can reduce the annoying errors.
Example
Taxi order form:
- Was: Enter the number
- Turned: Enter the phone number to confirm the trip
The second option explains why you need a number.
Relationship to user experience management
Reduce cognitive load
The simpler the phrases and fewer unnecessary texts, the faster the user moves towards the goal and makes actions without errors. Good microcopies remove fear and uncertainty, save time.
Improve product metrics
Good content design is about increasing conversions, decreasing casting, reducing the load on the appendix. Most major services regularly check metrics after microtext changes, and the exact numbers depend on the specifics of the market and the product itself.
FAQ
What is the difference between content design and UX ranking? In English terminology, there is often no strict distinction: in practice, content design is about designing and strategically planning information, and UX-writing is about writing texts for product interfaces.
How do you check if the microcopy works? Through quick usability tests, feedback, metric comparisons (e.g., form occupancy before and after changes).
**What are the main tasks of the microcopy? Simplify the user’s path, explain steps, reduce errors and questions.
**What if there is not enough data to write? Start with user scenarios and tasks on each screen, and then start up, collect feedback and make edits.
What sources do you see on the topic? Reviews of the Nielsen Norman Group (https://www.nngroup.com/topic/ux-writing/), analysis of the UX Collective are recommended.
**Can you keep the text to a minimum? Yes, but without losing meaning. A simple test: if you can delete a word and the instruction doesn’t lose its meaning, take it away.
